Crystal Blue Lamp

Ok, Something nifty for all you nerds out there who like that crystal blue color that seems to be on power buttons, Blue Tooth, etc. This is a lamp that creates that Crystal Blue glow and looks like actual crystal. Before I get into how to make it, understand that safety precautions should be taken at ALL times. This process involves breaking some glass and you must be sure to wear safty goggles and gloves the entire time you're dealing with broken glass! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS IF YOU ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 13 WITHOUT ADULT SUPERVISION. Ok with the legal-eze out of the way lets get onto what creating this slick cool lamp will entail.
Materials:
Yes you need materials to do this, shocker, but they're not expensive at all! Super Cheap! Ok, here's the list and prices that I got each one for:
  • Vase of some sort - $2 at a garage sale
  • 3 or more Mason Jars - about $5 at a thrift store
(NOTE: You may have to buy more mason jars if you pick a large vase)
  • Neon Blue LEDS - $5 at Shucks Auto Supply and they were already wired :)
  • Rag - Use an old T-Shirt and save $3
  • Shoe box - If I have to tell you, you should not be doing this
  • Hammer - Everybody should have one
Steps to Create:
Ok so now you have your parts, let me explain what to do, first off,
  • Make sure that you LEDs work and are all hooked together
You can do this by hooking each LED to main wire, or if you're more electronic savvy, you could just put all the LEDs on the same wire using resistors and whatnot, in any case, just make sure that it hooks up to a battery and works.

After you know that you LEDs work,
  • Place the LEDs in the Vase that you chose
I would space them apart some, about an 1 inch in between each LED and make sure that no LEDs are within 1/2 inch of the outside of the glass, the way this looks is purely aesthetic, but I'm telling you what I think is best and that seems to work well.

Time for the Dangerous stuff, Take all your materials to a place where nobody walks and there is no chance of anybody ever walking barefoot! This is important, while the chances of you getting glass on the ground is slim, it is best to take precautions.
  • Take your first mason Jar and wrap it in the rag
  • Use the Top of the hammer to smash the glass in the fag
  • Smash until all the chunks are 1/2 inch to 1 inch in diameter
Now you have some glass, put some gloves on for the next steps just to be safe
  • Take the glass you just smashed and gently pour it into the vase
Make sure that when you do this you don't jumble the LED's arrangement, it should not move them, only solidify their position. Its OK for them to move a bit, but don't let the falling glass totally re-arrange the way that your LEDs are positioned. Got that? OK,
  • Repeat Steps above with Mason Jars until Vase is filled to desired level
  • Light the LEDs up when done
Pretty cool eh? I like the Blue LEDs best, but you can use whatever color you like best, whatever the case, you just made a really cool looking lamp for under $10, not half bad! Have fun Lamp making!
